THE SUBTLE BRILLIANCE OF BIG SLEEP
Ireland has long been known for producing globally celebrated music acts, from stadium filling rock bands to boundary pushing indie artists. Within that rich musical landscape is Big Sleep, a band that carved out a distinctive sound that continues to resonate with those who discover it. With their debut EP in 2022, they’ve been gigging around Ireland. Alongside performing at major Irish Festivals (Forbidden Fruit, Electric Picnic, All Together Now) the band have sold out shows in London, Bristol, Manchester, Berlin, Hamburg, Amsterdam and Copenhagen.
Big Sleep, the Irish-Italian Indie Rock band was formed by lead vocalist Rónán Connolly and drummer Matteo Poli but later solidified with bassist Aidan Gray and guitarist Naiara Clarke LaFuente, who joined after a chance encounter involving an illegal rave, a forest, and a homemade stage. Since the release of their debut EP, the band has steadily built a name for themselves with a sound that feels both relaxed and emotionally resonant, an approach that sets them apart in Ireland’s ever evolving indie scene.
Their releases highlight the band’s ability to create mood without excess. The instrumentation is often minimal but effective, allowing space for the vocals to sit comfortably within the mix rather than dominate it. This balance gives their music a sense of intimacy, as though the listener is being let into a private moment rather than presented with a polished spectacle. Being able to hear each members talent is a breathe of fresh air. Lyrically, Big Sleep lean into themes of youth, reflection, and emotional uncertainty, which aren topics that feel familiar but are delivered with sincerity.
In the years following their debut, the band expanded their reach with a mix of singles and EPs. Releases like ‘Isn’t That Sweet’ and ‘Stay Put Sunshine’ demonstrate a shift towards a more polished indie sound, while still holding onto the laid-back charm that defines them. Tracks such as ‘Pick a Cheek’ and highlight this evolution. There’s a noticeable step up in production, with richer instrumentation and more dynamic arrangements.
One of the biggest milestones in their recent career is the release of their debut full length album Holy Show. This project marks a significant step forward, bringing together everything they’ve developed since 2022. They also hosted an album release gig , which I was lucky to attend. I cannot even describe the atmosphere that evening, it was chilled but also crazy in the best way. The band make everyone feel so welcomed and chat to basically every individual personally .Compared to their earlier EPs, the album presents a more cohesive and ambitious body of work, giving them space to explore different moods and styles across a longer format.
What makes Big Sleep particularly compelling is how naturally they fit into Dublin’s current music landscape while still maintaining a distinct identity. Many emerging bands chase louder, more immediate sounds, but Big Sleep take a different route. Their music invites listeners to slow down, to sit with a feeling rather than rush past it. We most definitely see this with their album Holy Show that was released this year. There is diversity between the tracks such as Old Friend(my personal favourite) and Don’t You Wanna, but they all fit ever so perfectly together.
After attending their recent gig in Kilkenny, my interest, support and respect has grown even more for them. They put on an amazing show with a great variety of their tracks. Post gig, they also hung around chatting to those in attendance and they’re just the most lovely, down to earth people. We also managed to catch Matteo’s airplane setlist… And oh yeah , their merch is so bloody comfy and such good quality
What’s particularly striking about Big Sleep at current is how they’ve managed to evolve without losing their identity. Their music still carries that relaxed, indie feel, but it’s now paired with stronger songwriting and a clearer artistic direction. As they continue releasing new music and playing bigger shows across Ireland and Europe, Big Sleep are moving beyond ‘emerging band’ status and into something more established. If their recent releases are anything to go by, they’re a band to keep an eye on.
